Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)
The Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) evaluates advanced-level English language competence of adult nonnative speakers of English. The MELAB consists of three parts: a composition, a listening test, and a written test containing grammar, cloze, vocabulary, and reading comprehension problems. An optional speaking test is also available. Many educational institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other countries accept the MELAB as an alternative to the TOEFL.
Scheduling
The Counseling & Testing Center offers the MELAB on an as needed basis. However, we are limited to one administration per calendar month and need at least two (2) weeks advance notice. To schedule a MELAB contact the CTC at 208-885-5138 or by email at ctc@uidaho.edu.
Registering
To register for a MELAB you must complete a MELAB Official Identification Form and bring it to the CTC along with your registration fee.
Cost
The fee for the MELAB is broken down into two parts. There is a $40 administration fee and a $40 testing fee. The administration fee can be paid by check or money order payable to the Bursar, University of Idaho. The testing fee can be paid by check or money order payable to MELAB.
Note: The CTC does not currently offer the speaking portion of the MELAB.
