INTERNSHIP IN PROFESSIONAL PSYCHOLOGY
August 1, 2009
Dear Prospective Applicant,
Welcome to the University of Idaho Counseling & Testing Center Pre-doctoral Internship Web-site! Our training faculty is committed to providing you with interesting and challenging training experiences and opportunities for personal and professional growth and development that will prepare you to make the transition from graduate school to new professional. We offer a well-rounded and versatile internship at a university counseling center and have a reputation for providing high quality training and excellent supervision.
The internship prepares interns to work in a university or college counseling center or other adult outpatient setting. Core training experiences include Counseling, Psychological Testing & Assessment, Outreach & Consultation, and Supervision (of practicum students). We also have several other unique training opportunities: a Psychiatry rotation and a Substance Abuse rotation, and training in basic biofeedback theory and applications.
The internship emphasizes training and experiences in providing services to a diverse clientele of students. The goals of diversity training emphasize, but are not limited to, improving ethnic and cultural sensitivity, increasing awareness of different lifestyles, becoming more familiar with the literature on multi-cultural counseling, and developing greater competence in providing effective counseling for clients from diverse backgrounds. We encourage and welcome interns from diverse backgrounds to apply and value interns for their individual and cultural diversity.
The University of Idaho and the CTC are committed to a campus community enriched by diver-sity. The university is in the midst of implementing a master plan for Diversity and Human Rights. One objective of the University’s Strategic Action Plan calls for enhanced relationships between Native American tribal nations and the University Community. Some of the campus diversity resources and programs include: the Office of Multicultural Affairs, The Native American Student Center, The College Assistance Migrant Program, federally funded TriO programs, Disability Services, the Women’s Center (one of the longest running in the nation), Veteran’s Affairs, and an active Safe Zone Education program. The mission of the Safe Zone program is to provide a safe and accepting environment and identify resources for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and individuals who may be questioning their sexual identity through trained allies.
We are located in Moscow, Idaho, a small, friendly university town in North Idaho. Moscow is just 7 miles from Pullman, Washington, the home of Washington State University. The two university communities offer residents access to a broad array of arts, cultural, athletic, and scholarly events. Major tourist destinations such as Seattle, Portland, Canada, Yellowstone and Glacier Park lie within a days’ driving distance. Idaho, nicknamed the Whitewater State, is renowned for its scenic beauty and uncrowded spaces.
I hope that you will give our internship serious consideration. I would be happy to talk with you further about the internship so please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have other questions or need more information. We can also arrange for you to speak with our current interns to get their perspective on the training experience.
Sincerely,
Martha Kitzrow, Ph.D., Director of Training
