Learning Disability & Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Assessment
Students struggle with academic success for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is a matter of motivation, study skills or simply not having the proper background. However, sometimes it is something beyond the student's control that is interfering with the learning process.
The Counseling & Testing Center provides a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment for students who suspect that they may have a learning disability or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. The process is designed to not only diagnose a disability if it is present, but also to determine the nature of what is interfering with the student's success and to offer recommendations that would benefit the student. The current fee for this service is $300, but a sliding fee schedule for students who can demonstrate need (eligibility for financial aid) is available that can reduce it to as little as $30.
Please note that the demand for this service is very high and waiting list times can be 6 months or more. A system has been developed to prioritize assessment referrals based largely on to what degree assessment will benefit the student while enrolled at the University of Idaho. A combination of factors are considered and a priority number is assigned to the the student at the time they are placed on the waiting list. Referrals from Disability Support Services, from within the CTC and/or from Dr. Cone of the Student Health Center will be given priority. If you do not have a referral from one of these sources your time on the waiting list will be significantly longer.
The process is as follows:
- Complete a Pre-assessment History Packet (available as a download or you can pick one up at the CTC)
- Come to the CTC with the completed Pre-assessment History Packet and have your name placed on the waiting list. Depending on the time of year and the demand for services, it may take several months to get you in for testing (longer if you do not have a referral form DSS, CTC or Dr. Cone). Local referral options for private assessment can be provided upon request.
- If you have copies of school records, report cards, previous assessment results or anything else related to your academic history, bring them with you to the first interview. At the end of the first interview a determination is made as to whether continued assessment is warranted. Up to this point there is no charge to the individual. If assessment continues, a fee will be charged.
- Assessment. Be prepared for 6-8 hours of assessment, typically 3 to 4 appointments, each 2 hours long. It is important that you are prepared to give your best effort on all testing in order that an accurate picture can be obtained. it is also important that you attend all scheduled sessions. If you miss an appointment without notifying us, you may be bumped to the bottom of the list.
- Meet for feedback session. This is typically one hour long and gives you the opportunity to have your testing findings explained and for you to ask questions. A written report will be available approximately one-two weeks following the feedback session.
