Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  If I go the Counseling & Testing Center, does it mean that there's something really wrong with me?

A.  Absolutely Not!  Many students who use our services are interested in their personal growth and adjustment to the world around them. Many students face normal developmental concerns and academic pressures while at the university.  A student may want to improve his/her skills in many areas.  Some students can use some help in finding a major or career that is a good fit for them.  At times students may feel acute anxiety, anger, sadness or depression.  Counseling can be helpful to students with these feelings.  As with any other group of people, a certain portion of the student population has difficulties of a more serious nature.  At times, more intensive therapy and/or medication may be appropriate.

Q.  What if it's a crisis or emergency?

A.  Crisis appointments are available during normal operating hours to students who may be experiencing a crisis situation. The student, or anyone referring the student, may request crisis scheduling. This service is not to replace ongoing counseling, but is there for crises. For after-hours crisis intervention, call the CTC at 885-6716 and one of the options will be to speak with a crisis counselor, call 911, or call the nearest hospital emergency room.

Q.  How much does it cost?

A.  Counseling services are free for students. A fee is charged for some assessment and testing services.

Q.  Who is eligible for counseling?

A.  Undergraduate students enrolled for eight or more credits and graduate students enrolled for six or more credits are eligible for counseling services. Students who do not meet the credit hour requirements and prospective students are eligible for limited services. All students are eligible for emergency counseling services, referral, and testing services. Part-time graduate students completing their research are eligible for services on a case-by-case basis. In some cases, students may be referred to other campus and community resources that will best meet their needs.

Counseling services are free. A fee is charged to cover the cost of some of the testing services.

Q.  How long are the sessions?

A.  Individual appointments usually last 50 minutes.

Q.  Is what I say confidential?

A.  All counseling is held in the strictest confidence.  Information cannot be released to anyone unless authorized by the student or mandated by law.  There are legal mandates to report imminent danger to self or others and abuse to children and elders.  A court ordered subpoena can in some instances require release of records to the court.

Q.  What if I don’t feel comfortable with the counselor I am set up with?

A.  If you don’t feel a connection with the counselor you’re assigned, you may request a different counselor.
